Prayers for Day Thirteen
There are many attributes of God for which I am
immensely thankful. But I am ashamed to
admit that when I think about patience, I usually think about the patience of
man (or lack thereof), as opposed to the patience of God toward
man. However, since patience is the
fruit of the Spirit, God must be the creator and perfecter of patience.
“The
LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.”
Psalm 103:8
“The
Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as
some count slowness, but is patient
toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach
repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9
God was patient with the people in Noah’s day…He
warned them over and over through the preaching of the local boat-builder. God was patient with the Israelites…He
repeatedly delivered them out of the wasteland of their disobedience. God was patient with Saul…Instead of killing
him on the road to Damascus ,
He called Saul to Himself for His glory and for the blessing of the Church.
What about us?
God’s patience with us should fill us with gratitude. It was not long ago that we were bent on evil
and focused on self. Yet, He rescued us,
the perishing, for the glory of His name.
What about the world today? Thanks be to God that he “has
endured with much patience vessels
of wrath prepared for
destruction”. (Romans 9:22) Maybe it’s
your brother or sister’s repentance He is waiting for…
And
now it’s our turn. A.W. Pink reminds us
that: “The patience of God is that excellency which causes Him to sustain great
injuries without immediately avenging Himself…When tempted to be disgusted at
the dullness of another, or to be revenged on one who has wronged you, call to
remembrance God’s infinite patience and longsuffering with yourself.”
“Therefore
be imitators of God, as beloved children.” (Ephesians 5:1)
